According to TeleAnalysis, a news company focused on the telecom industry, the number of connected wearable devices used by consumers is expected to number 168.2 million by 2019. Included in this statistic are mobile Personal Emergency Response Systems (mPERS).

Annual shipments of  medical devices are expected to increase to 7.1 million, while devices for people monitoring and safety, shipments should grow to 3.1 million by 2019.

The number of active cellular network connections from wearables is projected to reach 26.9 million in 2019. The growth is mainly from more people using cellular in the smart watch category and the fact that people monitoring & safety devices already use cellular connectivity. Most wearable medical devices will use low power NFC technologies and Bluetooth for connectivity. New product innovation will add to the overall growth.

The largest category of wearable devices is the fitness and activity trackers which make up most of today’s shipments. The smart watch category has also started to reach significant volumes and is predicted to become the largest device category reaching shipments of 90 million devices in 2019, up from 5 million units in 2014. So far, smart glasses sales have been modest.
